- The YMCA announced a three-year program to boost LGBTQ inclusion in programs throughout the nation. Marian Conway from NPQ explains the YMCA’s partnership with the Biden Foundation, Gill Foundation, and David Bohnett Foundation.
“The program, which will inaugurate a dedicated new staff position at the Y, will have a local focus, working with families and through community outreach, as well as directly with the LGBTQ community.”

- A new Harvard study estimates that at least 4,645 deaths in Puerto Rico can be linked to the Hurricane Maria and its immediate aftermath, making the storm far deadlier than previously thought. - Kriston Capps and Benjamin Schneider from CityLab share that Kaiser Permanente is pledging $200 million toward fighting homelessness and building more low-cost housing in eight states, plus D.C.
- Code for America is working to change the criminal record expungement process, and clear more than 250,000 marijuana convictions by 2019. Nicole Gallucci from Mashable explains how.
- Chris Johnson from the Washington Blade reports on 127 House Democrats calling on the White House to keep intact an Obama-era rule barring medical providers from denying health care to transgender patients, including gender reassignment surgery.
- Building inclusivity is critical in all social movements. Lizzie Shackney from Teen Vogue details how teen organizers are trying to build more inclusivity within the anti-gun violence movement in Birmingham, Alabama.
