Each week we try to bring you a collection of links that highlight political news that impact nonprofits, helpful links for nonprofit professionals, the importance of sharing stories, and something positive to end your week.

Helpful Nonprofit Links

  • Two Facebook links to start: Ariella Phillips from the Chronicle of Philanthropy highlights nonprofits that are adapting on Facebook to maintain fundraising campaigns. And Amy Petroy at M+R shares some new metrics to look at when reviewing your performance in the Wild West of Facebook. Yee-haw.
  • Beth Kanter writes about how to have a successful brainstorming at your nonprofit.
  • On this podcast, Joe Waters of Selfish Giving and Megan Strand from Engage for Good chat with Marty Posch, President of Finish Line Youth Foundation, about a checkout charity program that raised $825,000 for Special Olympics.
  • Catherine Cheney from Devex details a new platform created by Philanthropy University that offers free online courses for social changemakers.
  • DonorPerfect partnered with five women in a leadership role at their nonprofit organizations to create The Nonprofit Leadership Workbook for Women. Political News

  • The “Johnson Amendment,” is a law that shields 501c3 organizations from partisan politicking. It has been in place since 1954 and is currently threatened. Ruth McCambridge from Nonprofit Quarterly interviews Tim Delaney, president of the National Council of Nonprofits about what this means.
  • Alyssa Ochs and David Callahan highlight funders and nonprofit organizations in California who are working to reform the juvenile justice system.
  • This article isn’t from the past week, however, with the announcement that Mike Pompeo is moving into the Secretary of State role, it’s relevant again. This move may make life more difficult for those working on environmental issues and climate change. Sarah Emerson from Vice wrote about it in December when this change was first rumored.
  • Speaking of climate change, Natasha Geiling at ThinkProgress explains why President Trump’s offshore drilling plans continue to face opposition from local and state representatives, religious leaders, and environmental groups.
  • Meanwhile, Julia Belluz at Vox outlines new data about the health issues that are due to lead.
  • This week was highlighted by the student protests at 3000+ schools throughout the country. There are a few articles to highlight from this. The ACLU worked to educate students about their free speech and protest rights in advance of planned walkouts and other events. Erin Rubin from NPQ explains how.

Sharing Stories

This article from Emily Shapiro at ABC News highlights several images and videos from students protesting gun violence.

If you didn’t see this yet, Justin Blackman was the only student to participate at his school. While he said in the video, “There’s going to be like six people watching this” the video has been viewed over 5.8million times and he received notes of support from around the world, including students from Stoneman Douglas.
